Celebrate International Mother Language Day at LA Plaza with a conversation between author Ateri Miyawatt and activist Eduardo Garcia. Their discussion will explore the importance of linguistic and cultural diversity, as well as multilingualism, in fostering fairer and more inclusive societies. For Indigenous communities, linguistic diversity is a powerful source of resistance, resilience, and cultural continuity. This program is presented in partnership with Comunidades Indígenas en Liderazgo (CIELO).
ATERI MIYAWATT is the author of Neijmantototsintle (2016), which features linocuts by artist Francisco Villa. In 2018, the book received the Judges’ Choice Award at the Oxford Fine Press Book Fair in England.
Ateri has been published in the magazines Strange Horizons (2020) and Shilaa’ (2022), as well as in the anthology Raíces a una voz (2020). She studied theater at the Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolás de Hidalgo. She currently lives in her home community, and is very happy growing vegetables with her daughter, Kiawitl.
EDUARDO GARCÍA is the Senior Director of Policy at the Latino Community Foundation, where he advances the Foundation’s civic power strategy for Latino communities across California and beyond. His work focuses on strengthening economic security, democratic participation, and immigrant justice, and it has helped Latino-led organizations access and deploy significant public resources aligned with communities’ ongoing needs and priorities.
Previously, Eduardo worked in Washington, D.C., as a federal policy advocate, with experience in legislative strategy and advancing civil and human rights. He holds a master’s degree in public policy from the University of Michigan and is the son of immigrants from Zacatecas, Mexico.
