Located in the Western most region of the Santa Monica Mountains in Ventura County nestled on about 99 acres of unobstructed landscape. The address is 9199 Cotharin Rd., Malibu CA 90265.
World-renowned set designer Tony Duquette (1914-1999) built an extensive shangri-la in the Malibu Hills (within Ventura County boundary), much of it burned in the 1990s, and he rebuilt while in his 80s…. This property is now under the loving stewardship of architect David Hertz and his wife Laura Doss-Hertz.
Earlier this year the County of Ventura Cultural Heritage Board designated it as the Tony Duquette Historic District, which “showcases his signature use of found and repurposed materials, reminiscent of ‘art environments’ like Watts Towers in Los Angeles and Bottle Village in Simi Valley. He incorporated diverse elements such as scrap metal, surplus materials from military and Hollywood backlots, satellite dishes, fiberglass components, and succulents rescued from Chavez Ravine in Los Angeles. These materials, combined with salvaged movie set pieces like the gazebo from The Gazebo (1959)” and movies The King & I, and Kismet, “illustrate Duquette’s ability to transform discarded objects into cohesive and enchanting designs. The district contains 18 different types of contributing resources, including larger structures, such as a horse stables complex, triple pagoda, birdcage pavilion, and gazebo, along with smaller elements, such as sculptures, smaller gazebos, miscellaneous art installations and objects, and flag masts, along with landscape features, such as an open-space work yard and a foot trail linking the two parcels. The district is significant for its distinctive artistry, association with master artist Tony Duquette, and high artistic value, and represents Duquette’s creativity, blending art, set design, and unconventional materials, leaving a legacy as an innovator who redefined the boundaries of design and artistic environments."
