About this Event
What happens when Austen jumps from book to stage?
Find out first hand as a group of experienced local theatre directors tell their own stories. Over the past decade or so, Wellington has seen several excellent stage versions of Austen's novels, and you will have a chance hear from those who brought them to you. The directors will address questions like:
* what attracted them to Jane Austen
* how do you make a novel work in the theatre
* how to make a production relevant to modern audiences
* what are some problems they faced (and how they overcame them!)
* what were some memorable production moments
* how to escape the shadow of the famous screen versions
* whether there's an ideal "Austen acting style"
* your questions! (don't worry, we'll leave time)
Panelists:
Joy Hellyer (co-director and co-writer for both the 2013 and 2023 Pride and Prejudice; also co-director and co-writer for 2022 Sense and Sensibility)
Paul Kay (co-director and co-writer for the 2013 Pride and Prejudice; also co-director and co-writer for 2022 Sense and Sensibility)
Amy Whiterod (co-director and co-writer for the 2023 Pride and Prejudice)
Anna Renton-Greene (director and writer for 2024 Persuasion)
Our moderator Paul Stone works as a public servant in the field of education. He has acted in several Austen theatre productions, including playing the role of Mr Bennet in Pride and Prejudice and Sir John Middleton in Sense and Sensibility. His talk to the society last year on mansplaining in Austen was very well received.
