Embrace a sense of play and delight with poetry. Even experienced poets are sometimes afraid to try different poetic forms. However, if one thinks of poetic forms as similar to a game structure, we see forms for what they are: an invitation to play.Instructor Sarah Yi-Mei Tsiang is the author of "Grappling Hook", shortlisted for the Raymond Souster Award; Status Update, shortlisted for the Pat Lowther Award; and the Gerald Lampert Award-winning collection, Sweet Devilry. Her books of poetry include lyric poems, as well as poems using such traditional forms as glossa, sonnet, haiku, and many others.
The class will begin with the poems of Issa Kobayashi, as Sarah explores how haiku can be funny, tender, and profound. Participants will try their hands at a mix of forms, some of which have been invented recently, such as the Magic 8 Ball, the Pas de Deux, and the Split Sonnet, as well as more traditional forms such as Haiku and Erasure.
This fun workshop, designed for novice writers but appropriate for all, is meant to take the fear out of writing poetry, and return participants to poetry’s original source of wonder and enchantment.
