Play Therapy with Victims of Sexual Abuse (VIRTUAL)

This continuing education event reviews the functional and mental health impacts of sexual abuse on children in different developmental stages. Training will include review of current literature on Play Therapy treatment of sexual abuse including identificaiton of play themes, treatment strategies, and challenges of working with the population. Participants will learn specific Play Therapy interventions to support children and treat the trauma of sexual abuse. Participants will learn through active skills practice and through case discussion.

At the end of this workshop, the learner will be able to:

1. Differentiate between normative sexual development and biopsychosocial impacts of sexual abuse on development

2. Recite the SECURE lens model for trauma-informed Play Therapy

3. Identify major play themes and play scenarios common to victims of sexual abuse

4. Develop targeted treatment strategies to address common trauma responses

5. Use directive Play Therapy interventions to alleviate trauma related to sexual abuse

6. Apply self-care and trauma stewardship strategies to promote sustainable practice

Participation

A Time for Play Therapy Continuing Education events are professional trainings developed for master's level mental health clinicians and students. Prior Play Therapy knowledge and experience are helpful but not necessary to participate. Play Therapy credit available to mental health professionals and graduate students in a mental health program.

Handouts

Each registration for an A Time for Play Continuing Education includes limited time access to a Google Drive folders with handouts specific to the training. It also includes a folder of suggested readings of articles, book excerpts, and research that are specifically relevant to the Play Therapy training topic. Please make sure you are able to access and download the materials.

Virtual Attendance

Per APT guidelines, virtually attendees must keep your cameras on and be present and focused throughout the entire presentation. This guideline is especially important because there are several interactive activities and breakout discussions that require group participation.

Post-Test and Evaluation

Participants will be given a post-test and an anonymous evaluation to complete at the end of each training. Participants must attest to completing the evaluation and must meet a minimum score of 80% to receive Continuing Education credit.

The Association for Play Therapy sets the credentialing standards for Play Therapists and approves applications for the Registered Play Therapist Credential.
