About this Event
What happens if your material questions become your art practice? Come and try on the answer to this question with Olivia and Susie in this week-long intensive. We’ll put into action the verbs of glass-making, moving away from metaphor and towards collective
gesture. We’ll explore the hot and cold shops through prompts, material experimentation,
word play, games and racoon-like attention to shiny magic. Join us if you know glass and want to shake up your relationship to it, and come play if glass is a stranger and you want a blind date with a hottie. This class will culminate in a quick group exhibition at Urban Glass.
What to Expect: All experience levels are welcome. We’ll vary our approach daily, but will be consistently collaborative. We will demonstrate both how to make things and demonstrate how to loosen our idea of what making things means. Plan to experiment and to embrace failure as a skill. We will play with sound, with drawing, with gesture, with rule breaking. Whatever happens, we will be playing in service of display- the end result of our week will be a pop-up show at UrbanGlass.
The hot shop is a loud studio, and can get quite warm. Read more about how to prepare for class on our Registration Info page. Handling glass and tools may require a certain level of dexterity and ability to lift 5-10 lbs approximately. To learn more about accessibility the Accessibility page on our website.
Eligibility: No experience necessary. Open to ages 14 and up.
Pick-up: The glass needs to cool down overnight, so the students will have to return to UrbanGlass once notified to pick up their work.
This is an in-person class taking place on-site at UrbanGlass. Health and safety guidelines will be emailed to you upon registration.
We recommend registering for classes early to reserve your spot! We base materials, and teacher needs off of student enrollment. Early registration not only guarantees your spot in class, but also helps to ensure the class will run. Classes with low enrollment may be cancelled within two weeks of the start date of class. Contact our Registrar of Education, Ari Eshoo, at [email protected] if you have questions about the class or would like to arrange a payment plan.
