About this Event

Released in late 1942, Casablanca is widely regarded as one of the greatest films ever made. Set during WWII, it combines romance, drama, humour and political tension, with memorable performances from Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman, a sharp screenplay and unforgettable dialogue. Beneath its love story, however, lies a wartime propaganda message designed to encourage support for the Allied cause. Illustrated with clips and stills from the film, Ian Garden’s presentation explores its origins, uncovers little-known facts about cast and plot, highlights mistakes, and explains why a heavily censored version remained the only one shown in West Germany until 1980.
