Plant Systematics Course Series for Enthusiasts & Pros (Class 4)

To maximize educational impact, we request participants register for all 4 classes included in this series.

Plant Systematics Course Series (Class 4): Derived Eudicots — Nightshades, Mustards & Gourds
We’ll finish with three high-impact families that dominate gardens, farms, and markets: Solanaceae (nightshades), Brassicaceae (mustards), and Cucurbitaceae (gourds). These families are ideal for leveling up your identification skills because their floral and fruit traits are highly diagnostic when you know what to look for.

We’ll cover key morphology and vocabulary, then practice separating these groups using repeatable characters (flower symmetry, ovary position, inflorescence cues, and fruit types).

Mini-Lab: Side-by-side observation + guided flower/fruit diagrams and labeling using a small set of samples.

What to bring: sketchbook/journal + pencil/pen. Optional: hand lens.

Meet Gabriella de Souza

Gabriella de Souza is a plant ecologist, science communicator, and community educator dedicated to connecting people with the natural world through engaging, research-based education. Based in Wilmington, North Carolina, Gabriella brings over a decade of experience in plant science to her work, blending academic expertise with creative outreach.

Gabriella holds a B.S. in Biology and Environmental Sciences and a Master of Science in Biology from UNC Wilmington. Her passion for environmental education is evident in her dynamic workshops, public presentations, and collaborations with nonprofits, schools, and conservation organizations.

With a focus on native plant conservation and science literacy, Gabriella’s mission is to cultivate curiosity and confidence in every green thumb—whether they're just starting out or seasoned gardeners ready to deepen their ecological impact.
