Plant Science Basics Series: Part 2 - Soil Health & Structure
About this Event
It's not 'dirt'... it's soil!
NHG proudly welcomes back teacher Iman Jones for a special hands-on series.
NEW! Soil is more than just dirt. It's a living, breathing ecosystem essential to plant success and human life on earth. In this second session, beginner gardeners will build a deeper understanding of what makes soil fertile, how its components interact, and how to recognize healthy soil using their senses. Participants will also explore the essential roles that microbes, fungi, and other organisms play in supporting plant health. With a focus on the soils typical of the North Texas growing region, this class equips students to protect and improve their garden’s foundation naturally and intentionally.
What You'll Do:
- Participants will receive note taking guides to help them follow along and document their learning.
- Next, we'll move from presentation and discussion to hands-on soil sampling and a macro-to-microscopic exploration of the world under our feet.
- We’ll end our time together with interactive Q&A so that every participant leaves with the knowledge that they need to garden Victoriously.
What to bring: A writing utensil and curiosity! All other supplies, including optional gloves, are provided.
You’ll be a mad scientist for the day and leave understanding what your plants need, and more importantly, why.

A Master Gardener with a BS in Biology and 8+ years in STEM education, Iman has guided 400+ gardens into existence across DFW, and counting.
Victory Gardens: Victory Gardens installs raised garden beds across DFW: delivered, planted, and ready to grow. Every bed comes with the option of a Grow Coach, so your garden gets stronger over time instead of fading while you learn the ropes. We also offer garden design, consulting, and educational programs for those who want to go further.
