The PJ Fossum Trio, consisting of pianist P Jacob Fossum (Calgary/NYC/Copenhagen), bassist Finn McConnell (Calgary/Montreal) and drummer John Buck (Calgary/Montreal) has been playing together for the past 8 years with Calgary as the hub for their collaboration. Combining P Jacob’s inventive compositions drawing from New York jazz sensibilities and European improvised music, Finn’s flowing and melodic bass playing, and John’s sensitive and exploratory drumming, the trio creates music that both pulls together the deep history of the jazz tradition into a wider world of contemporary possibilities.
Between 2014-15, P Jacob moved to New York (later to Denmark), and Finn & John moved to Montreal with the former returning to his native Calgary in 2020. Despite moving to different locales they’ve continued to play together whenever possible, collaborating with new compositions, improvisational techniques and a shared love of music each influenced by their respective scenes.
P Jacob Fossum is a Copenhagen based pianist, synthesist and electronic musician. Born and raised in Canada and having cut his teeth in New York, he’s been moulded into a versatile and genre defying artist. From ambient to avant-garde, bebop to baroque, indie-rock to impressionist he merges these influences in an inventive and expressive manner across both acoustic and electronic instruments creating colourful and inventive sound worlds.
He has shared the stage with musicians such as Tyshawn Sorrey, Okkyung Lee, Ingrid Jensen, Nir Felder, Val Jeanty, Morgan Guerin, PJ Perry and Pat Lebarbera and studied under the tutelage of Reggie Workman, Andrew Cyrille, Dave Douglas, Jason Lindner, Jane Ira Bloom and Sam Yahel.
