About this Event
Australia maintains the highest material footprint per capita among G20 nations, while currently achieves a material circularity rate of only 5%. With the construction and demolition sectors generating 29 million tonnes of waste annually, the industry faces an urgent mandate to transition from extractive, linear "take-make-waste" models toward a regenerative, closed-loop economy.
Grimshaw's panel event will discuss the value of circular design outcomes across a range of real-life projects. With a social housing client, interior designer, innovative bio-material manufacturer, and materials engineer joining the discussion we will consider the relationship of demand signal to supply chain and tease out the barriers and opportunities to implementing circular and bio-based outcomes. It will be a reflection on the roles that design excellence and industry innovation play in supporting this transition.
The event also serves as an invitation to experience Grimshaw’s Melbourne Studio, a tangible case study of these principles. The fit-out achieved a 56% reduction in embodied carbon compared to business-as-usual benchmarks by using rigorous design principles to minimise the need for new materials without compromising aesthetics. The interior integrates re-used furniture and building fabric with reclaimed urban salvage timber and high-recycled content cabinetry. Furthermore, the space showcases product innovation through the use of carbon-sequestering Durra Panel waste wheat straw interior walls and adaptable, modular shelving systems.
Attendees are invited to explore the studio’s architectural models and drawings, featuring significant local Melbourne and international works. The evening provides a forum to connect through the multidisciplinary and multi-stakeholder challenges and opportunities inherent in the circular design transition. The event is accompanied by drinks and light refreshments.
The evening is ticketed with proceeds going to not-for-profit organisation, Greenfleet (greenfleet.com.au), to support legally protected native Australian forests to deliver climate action, create habitat for native wildlife, and help conserve biodiversity.
