The demonstration activity will take place from 10:30 - 12 pm with an optional shared lunch from 12 - 1 pm. This event is outside, so please dress accordingly.
Family friendly! Appropriate for ages 7 and up.
Why Mushrooms?
Oyster mushrooms are highly nutritious, extremely versatile in the kitchen, and a delight to witness as they fruit. They are widely known as a beginner mushroom for at-home cultivation, because they require minimal attention and grow quite well in containers.
Most people don’t know how mushrooms grow or what they need—so that’s what we’ll cover in this class! It’s actually fairly simple and easily understood by children and adults alike.
Once we’ve discussed the basics of mycelium vs. mushrooms, fruiting conditions, and harvesting, we will assemble containers together for you to take home. It’s like having a new houseplant friend!
You can expect at least one substantial harvest, if not two. You can even expand to a larger container and grow more!
These pink oysters are truly vibrant and taste incredible when pan fried in oil or butter. Kids will love ‘em, I guarantee it!
About Flying Pig Farm
Flying Pig Farm, under the 501c3 fiscal sponsorship of Pikes Peak Permaculture, offers itself as a 1-acre community learning garden to the children, gardeners, and curious people of the Pikes Peak Region.
Students of all ages are invited to programs, classes, workshops, and meals shared at Flying Pig with the express purpose of deepening knowledge and relationship with high-quality nutrition and carefully tended plants.
Through hands-on educational experiences, we link fifty students a week to plants, animals, and the environmental history of the region. We currently host student groups from Manitou Springs Middle School and Community Prep School on a regular basis. Each growing season we offer community garden plots, donation-based produce, and Farm Camps.
The farm sits on 1 acre of historic land in Manitou Springs, CO. The farm is located on ancestral Ute territory and in 1919 became a tree nursery under the stewardship of Everard Keithley. Everard was the superintendent of Pikes National Forest and re-forested much of what had been lost to wildfires and logging.
In 2014, Doug Edmundson, the great-grandson of Everard Keithley partnered with local farmers to transform 1 acre of the farm into a community farm and gathering space.
