Since May 2018, post-punk outfit PINCH POINTS have played clean, angular guitar harmonies and mechanical riffs, belting out group-vocals, all at a turbo-punk speed. J. Edward Keyes of Bandcamp described their sound as ‘a barbed-wire coil of sound that’s as loose and springy as it is dangerously serrated’.
PINCH POINTS are Acacia (Slush, Sunfruits), Adam (Gee Seas), Issy (Jungle Breed) and Jordan (PBS). Their debut album ‘MOVING PARTS’ was released in May 2019 through Roolette Records (AUS) and Six Tonnes de Chair (France). This LP was the follow-up release to their internationally acclaimed and sold-out cassette ‘MECHANICAL INJURY’ from July 2018, which was one of four Australian releases included in Bandcamp's 'Best 100 releases of 2018’.
‘MOVING PARTS’ saw the band explore heavier, faster and more technical styles. Usual elements still abound - clean guitars through maxed compression pedals, competing vocals, consistent drum fills and roaring bass - but every element stretched beyond the limitations of ‘MECHANICAL INJURY’. PINCH POINTS maintain their DIY approach, having recorded and mixed the LP in their Coburg house, and designed the artwork themselves.
In 2019 the band played seven shows across four different Australian states on tour with Tropical Fuck Storm and Surfbort (USA). PINCH POINTS were also invited to play a live-to-air set in the 3RRR performance space to a full room of friends and fans. Other highlights of the year included supporting Amyl and The Sniffers at their sold-out album launch, playing a two-band sold-out bill with Viagra Boys (SE), and performing in Charlton for ‘OK Motels’.
In early 2020, PINCH POINTS supported Kikagaku Moyo for their sold-out show at The Croxton, played Grampians Music Festival and opened Golden Plains Festival in Meredith to an eager crowd of 10,000+ people. In March, PINCH POINTS independently released LIVE at RRR on cassette, and in December they were named Best Breakthrough Act in the Music Victoria Awards.
The band recorded their third studio release with Anna Laverty (Courtney Barnett, Nick Cave, The Peep Tempel) at Audrey Studios in March 2021, and are currently in the middle of the mastering stage. The 11-track sophomore LP is the band’s most collaborative work to date, expanding their sonic palette to cover crunchier guitar tones, faster BPM sections and some jangle-leaning compositions. Lyrically, the album explores modern anxieties and fractures in so-called ‘Australia’, such as catastrophic bushfires, gendered violence, mental health struggles and First Nations incarceration and deaths in custody.
