About this Event

Ulster University students only.

Joseph Walsh (b. 1979, County Cork, Ireland) is a Designer and Maker whose work reflects his passion for expression through material and form. From monumental scale sculptures to one-of-a-kind site-specific commissions, every piece within his body of work reveals an intuitive relationship with making, a sympathetic use of materials – including wood, marble, resin and bronze and an expressive engagement with form. In 1999, Joseph Walsh established his own workshop in FARTHA. Today, his Studio comprises of a workshop, design studio and gallery.

His achievements in design have been recognised by an honorary doctorate from University College Cork, a major commission for the National Gallery of Ireland and the acquisition of works for many major international collections, including most recently the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris.

“There is no rush to create the perfect piece. It’s more about creating a set of circumstances where I can achieve a perfect rhythm. That’s when something special emerges.”

In addition to his Studio practice, Joseph Walsh has cultivated a rich cultural programme. Making In, established in 2017, is a non-profit organisation initiated as an annual seminar of international creatives from the disciplines of art, craft, design and architecture. Recently, the programme expanded beyond the workshop at Joseph Walsh Studio to a wider audience through the making and release of documentary films as well as cross-cultural group exhibitions.

In an effort to inspire a new generation of designers, artists and makers, this talk will focus on Joseph Walsh's distinguished career, Joseph Walsh Studio as a globally renowned design practice and the cultural significance of Making In.
