From his first break in 1979, when Joan Baez recorded “Song at the End of the Movie”, to his celebrated place in New York’s 1980s Fast Folk movement alongside Shawn Colvin and Suzanne Vega, Pierce Pettis has been a vital voice in American songwriting.Pettis released his solo debut Moments in 1984 and went on to record a string of acclaimed albums including Chase the Buffalo (1993) and State of Grace (2001). Over the years, he has crafted songs that blend folk, rock, country, and R&B, earning him a reputation as a songwriter’s songwriter. His work has been recorded by artists such as Dar Williams, Garth Brooks, Art Garfunkel, and Susan Ashton.
Known for his finely wrought, heart-touching songs, Pettis has continued to release thoughtful and resonant music across decades, including That Kind of Love (2009), New Agrarians (with Kate Campbell & Tom Kimmel, 2013), and his most recent solo project Father’s Son (2019).
