Learn how to safely preserve food at home with Chef Karen Dar Woon.
Small-batch food preservation is a practical way to reduce food waste, make the most of seasonal ingredients, and stretch your food budget. In this hands-on workshop, Karen will introduce the fundamentals of safe food handling, water-bath canning, refrigerator pickling, and proper food storage.
Participants will prepare their own jar of refrigerator pickles to take home and enjoy a selection of seasonal tastings, including fruit jam, pickles, and a surprise item.
All tasting items will be prepared without gluten-containing ingredients.

About Chef Karen Dar Woon
Karen Dar Woon facilitates science-based cooking and food preservation workshops throughout Metro Vancouver. With formal education in engineering technology and business, as well as more than 20 years of experience in both graphic arts and culinary arts, Karen brings a practical, evidence-informed approach to food education.
At age 45, Karen completed the Serious Foodies culinary training program at Northwest Culinary Academy of Vancouver, and at age 60, she began wine education at the Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts.
Karen is the Cook Like a Mother facilitator for Mom2Mom and a former cooking class facilitator for the Richmond Food Security Society. She has co-facilitated Train-the-Trainer Canning Workshops with Fresh Choice Kitchens and completed Food Skills for Families training through Diabetes Canada.
Her work focuses on supporting a strong regional food system and improving individual and community food security. She is a longtime supporter of organizations including Growing Chefs, Slow Food International, Vancouver Farmers Markets, Farm Folk City Folk, Gordon Neighbourhood House, and SFU Public Square.
Karen has been a member of Les Dames d’Escoffier BC Chapter since 2012, previously served as Co-President, and currently serves as Co-Chair of the Scholarship Committee. She is also the Board Chair of Coastal Jazz, presenter of the Vancouver International Jazz Festival and year-round events.

Accessibility
The Skript Kitchen has step-free access through the main entrance and is equipped with an automatic door opener. Please note that there is a moderately narrow passage between the entrance and the workshop area.
A spacious, single-user washroom is available on the ground floor, and the workshop space is air-conditioned.
Attendees will be seated at tables with chairs. Please contact us in advance if you require additional space for a mobility device or have any other accessibility needs so appropriate arrangements can be made.
