Doodad Farm has hosted hundreds of musicians playing lots of different instruments, with the guitar easily being at the top of the list. For some reason, this is especially true of songwriters. So we thought it was high time to shine the limelight on regional songwriters who write songs on keyboards (or do they call it “composing”?). We’ve invited three of NC’s best piano-based songwriters—each with their own unique style—to come together on our stage to present their original songs. This will be a fun, family-friendly show.TIM “TEEYUM” SMITH is a versatile musician who plays many types of music in bands from contra dance music to country honkytonk and rock and roll. In recent years, Tim has worked hard on his songwriting and has written a number of thoughtful, original and often funny songs. Regarding Tim’s 2023 recording “Participating at Last:”
“I was thoroughly entertained from the beginning to the end. It never goes for the cliches, it is thoughtfully arranged, and I really had a good time listening to it!”
– Matt Watroba, long-time radio host on Michigan public radio and coordinator of Swannanoa Gathering Traditional Song Week.
WILLIAM NESMITH, a Carolina native, is an award winning singer-songwriter and pianist. From inspiring ballads to bubbly bops, he uses his unique vocal range to paint a spectrum of emotions. Since 2018, Nesmith has played hundreds of shows with an acoustic set of popular covers and fun original tunes (while wearing party sunglasses). He’s the 2018 Nashville Songwriters Association International (NSAI) Songwriter’s Standoff winner and the 2020 Doodad Farm 60-second songwriting contest winner.
JACK GORHAM’s music frequently draws comparisons to artists whose styles are as far flung as Billy Joel and Randy Newman to the poetic likes of Leonard Cohen and Tom Waits. Whether it is a sweet love song, a bluesy, toe tapping romp or a contemplative musing about time and the human condition, it is readily apparent that at the heart of Gorham’s work is a desire to communicate ideas and emotions directly to the willing listener. His words and melodies work hand in hand to transplant audiences to the world Gorham creates. It is not uncommon for Jack to riff on the origins of his songs, giving insights into the inner workings of his storytelling process before the first note is played. Other times he moves swiftly from song to song leaving interpretations entirely up to the listeners. However the music is presented, those in attendance of a Jack Gorham performance are touched in some way and often leave with a new perspective after the experience.
HOW TO JOIN US
You never need a ticket or a reservation to attend one of our concerts -- just show up. If we had a gate, it would open at 2pm. Feel free to show up earlier than that, even, if you just want to enjoy the weather, have a picnic, or just hang out. The show will start at 3pm or shortly thereafter.
Doodad Farm never charges for entry to concerts, though we do request that those who are able (and you know who you are) donate near the stage area. Every penny of your donations goes straight to the performers. We think $10-20 per person is a reasonable donation for this show. As always, we ask that you surprise yourself with your own generosity to support our performers. There will also be albums and other merch available, and that's a great way to show your appreciation for these talented musicians.
