Mephisto Waltz No. 1
This program traces a dramatic arc through some of the most captivating masterpieces of the piano repertoire: It begins with the monumental organ's Toccata and Fugue in D minor by Johann Sebastian Bach, which Ferruccio Busoni transformed into an orchestral sonic event for the modern concert grand, while Felix Mendelssohn’s Variations sérieuses bring a deeply personal and introspective voice to the evening. After Hans von Bülow’s brilliant operatic reminiscences on Verdi’s Un ballo in maschera, the program reaches its climax with Franz Liszt’s electrifying Rigoletto Paraphrase — a wild fusion of bel canto drama and pianistic bravura — as well as the highly virtuosic Mephisto Waltz No. 1, music that marries theatrical sophistication with blazing imagination. Between sacred grandeur and operatic brilliance, between romantic passion and exciting dance, sonic worlds unfold of unbridled virtuosity and overwhelming emotional power.
Vladimir Stoupel brings these works to life with his unique combination of intellectual depth, passionate expressiveness, supreme virtuosity, and charismatic stage presence, giving each piece the insight and poetic sensitivity for which he is admired worldwide.
