After Hans von Bülow’s brilliant operatic reminiscences on Verdi’s Un ballo in maschera, the program reaches its climax with Franz Liszt’s electrifying Rigoletto Paraphrase — a wild fusion of bel canto drama and pianistic bravura — as well as the highly virtuosic Mephisto Waltz No. 1, music that marries theatrical sophistication with blazing imagination.
