Your Topic:

The hidden world of Photonics, and how South Australian inventors are shaping tomorrow’s technologies.

We all know electronics. It is in our phones, our cars, and most everyday devices. But have you heard of photonics?

Photonics is the science and technology of light, and it is all around us. It is behind the optical fibres connecting the world that allow us to stream content from data centres across the globe, the barcode scanners at the supermarket, the high-res cameras in our phones, and the sensors helping self-driving cars perceive the world around them.

But Photonics isn’t just powering the technology we rely on today: it is actively shaping new technologies! So what are researchers, right here in South Australia, working on today that could change the way we live tomorrow?

Join science communicator Laurence Deziel as she explores the hidden world of photonics and the incredible technologies being developed in your backyard (well…labs!). From ultra-precise GPS powered by quantum clocks and new tools to identify arterial plaques for heart health management, to internet fibre manufactured in space and light sensors hidden inside your toaster. This presentation is a celebration of South Australian innovation and the remarkable potential of photonics.

Your Speaker:

Laurence Deziel is a science communicator who, much like Obelix falling into the magic potion, accidentally fell into the world of photonics more than 12 years ago and never looked back. She is Executive Officer of the Institute for Photonics, Advanced Sensing and Quantum Technologies (IPAS-QT), at the University of Adelaide, Marketing and Communications Officer at the Australian National Fabrication Facility with the Optofab Adelaide Hub, and Director of Photonics Industries Australia. With a background in communications rather than physics, Laurence has spent more than a decade sharing the stories behind some of the incredible technologies being developed with light. Passionate about raising awareness of photonics, Laurence works across research, industry, government and the community to strengthen connections, share knowledge and help grow Australia’s photonics industry.
