Photographing the Bald Eagles of Conowingo Dam
About this Event
October 31 class & November 6 workshop
Join Dan's Camera City and Tamron for a special photo expedition to Conowingo Dam - an amazing place to see bald eagles in the wild, catching fish on the river. They're often found numbering several dozen to even a hundred or more!
Your expedition includes:
- Classroom session to help you get great pictures on our outing.
- Bus transportation to and from Conowingo Dam
- 4 hours on location with Dan's Camera City photo instructors for one-on-one guideance and feedback.
- Free loaner lenses from Tamron to use during our outing
Our expedition will begin on Saturday, Oct. 31 with class here at Dan's to help you get ready. We'll discuss tips and techniques for great wildlife photos, including:
- Understanding animal behavior to help you capture a great photo
- Choosing a composition for strong impact
- Proper use of telephoto and all-in-one zoom lenses
- Making the light work for you, and more.
Then we'll meet up early on Friday, November 6 (rain Nov. 13) for our bus trip down to Conowingo Dam at the mouth of the Susquehanna River on the Chesapeake Bay. Since we'll get the best photos in the first few hours of daylight, we'll be meeting here at 5:00am to arrive by 7:00am.
Free loaner lenses from Tamron, bus transportation, and hands-on instruction
Don't have a great lens for bird photography? We've got you covered! Tamron will be bringing a variety of great lenses for you to use during the workshop. Bus transportation means you can take a nap on the way down!
And Dan's Camera City instructors will be right there with you for hands-on guidance and feedback every step of the way.
DRESS WARMLY, IN LAYERS for this photo outing. We'll be standing outside on a river in November around sunrise. Wool socks and insulated boots are a good idea. Hand warmers in your pockets can keep your fingers in good shape to operate your camera. You can always go back to the bus to warm up, but you don't want to miss time photographing!
Gear to consider:
- Long telephoto lens - the longer, the better. 400-500mm is not unreasonable for this outing. 600mm or more is ideal!
- Tripod or monopod - those big lenses can get heavy. The perfect tripod for this outing would be one that goes higher than eye level without raising the center column and has a gimbal style head. We would not recommend a pistol grip, pan, or 3 way head - those will make it more difficult to track the eagles in flight.
- Extra batteries kept in your inside coat pocket - cold weather is hard on batteries.
