Prerequisites: Photo 101: Understanding Manual Camera Settings or manual camera knowledge

This interactive workshop will explore the principles of composition and creative techniques to elevate participants’ photography skills. Attendees will learn how to frame their shots effectively, utilize lighting creatively, and incorporate advanced techniques to make their images more visually compelling.

Photography 102 is all about moving beyond the technical basics and exploring what makes an image truly interesting. In this class, we'll dive into composition, visual storytelling, creative perspectives, lighting techniques, and the artistic choices that can transform an ordinary photo into something memorable.

My goal is to create a relaxed, encouraging environment where students can experiment, take creative risks, and develop their own unique style. Whether you're looking to improve your travel photos, create stronger artwork, or simply challenge yourself creatively, this class will help you build the skills and confidence to make more intentional and compelling images.

There is no materials fee for this class.

Learning Objectives

• How to use your skills from Photo 101 to create visually interesting images.
• Learn the principals of composition, using light & shadows to your advantage, depth and perspective, creative camera settings and techniques and storytelling.
• Know how to use the principles of basic photography to create their own visually compelling imagery.
• Be able to apply these skills to their own business or other mediums

Instructor - Amber Halt (@amberhaltphotography)

Amber Halt is a commercial photographer with a degree in Commercial Photography and a passion for helping people feel comfortable behind the camera. Over the years, they have photographed everything from public art installations for projects like the Boston Public Art Triennial to products and branding content for local small businesses.

When not working with clients, she is usually creating my own artwork and photography, some of which you can find for sale at local shops like The Emporium. They love exploring the creative side of photography just as much as the technical side, and believe great photos come from understanding both.

Class Policies

Attire: Attendants should wear close-toed slip-resistant shoes (steel-toe work boots are ideal), long pants, and no loose-fitting clothing that could possibly get caught in machinery. Make sure to wear only natural fibers (i.e., cotton, wool, linen, etc) and bring reading glasses if needed for detailed work.
