Nina Garcia:
Since 2015, Nina Garcia has been researching and creating around the electric guitar, halfway between improvised music and noise. Her set-up is reduced to a minimum: a guitar, a pedal, and an amp with which she sculpts sound and delves into chaos to bring out the unheard-of. Her concerts draw audiences into an immersive sonic space where power and fragility intersect with communicative intensity. In just a few years, she has attracted the attention of numerous international stages.
Nina Garcia presents a new work with a magnifying glass where the guitar is amplified by 1-inch zones. A fist linked to a micro-microphone, « ultra-territorial » music and total dependence of the sound on the slightest movement. What emerges from this new research is a tenfold increase in tension, forced silences, aborted feedback, and manufactured loops that are always trying to move forward. Her music is increasingly handmade, but always with a high intensity. In this new set we find her classical Mariachi folklore: threaded rods, saturated wedding and funeral noises, assertive rhythms and breaks, and a privileged link with the amp as a playing partner.
A duo rather than a solo, it stuns with its blend of technical mastery and total freedom. Nina converges between wildness and tenderness with her instrument, a tense corps à corps between two vibrant souls, music and choreography of raw poetry.
_________
Maria Bertel
Is a danish trombone player, and composer. The acoustic sound of her amplified instrument creates an output that draws inspiration from drone and noise music. What is normally not hearable is presenting itself, movements, metal and breath becomes a swirling part of her compositions. Changing organic patterns are emerging, tiny sounds becomes brutally clear as well as the range of overtones of the instrument.
Apart from her work as a solo artist she performs and composes in groups like the notorious four piece noise rock band Selvhenter and improvised noise outfit duo Nina Garcia & Maria Bertel. She has also collaborated with artists like Chinese saxophone player Lao Dan, and Virginia Genta of Jooklo duo.
_________
John Butcher & Aske Krammer
Born in Brighton (1954) and living in London, John Butcher is a saxophonist whose work ranges through improvisation, his own compositions, multitracked pieces and explorations with feedback, unusual acoustics and non-concert locations. He is well known as a solo performer who attempts to engage with a sense of place. Resonant Spaces, for example, is a collection of performances recorded during a tour of unusual locations in Scotland and the Orkney Islands.
Butcher originally studied Physics, but after publishing a PH.D (1982) on quantum chromodynamics he left academia and took off with music. He has since collaborated with hundreds of artists, some for many decades, including Derek Bailey, Eddie Prévost, John Stevens’ Spontaneous Music Ensemble, Okkyung Lee, Andy Moor, Sophie Agnel, Christian Marclay, Pat Thomas, Phil Minton, Rhodri Davies, Tony Buck, Magda Mayas, John Russell, Chris Corsano, Steve Beresford, Ståle Liavik Solberg, Angharad Davies and Matthew Shipp.
If an abstract painting suddenly grew arms so it could battle a drumkit in an astral colosseum, whilst pillowtalking the fierce beasts of an apocalyptic rumpus, it would maybe sound like Aske Krammer conducting his exploration of the inner and outer continent of the percussive realm.
Through a dualistic approach to improvised chaos and softer playful experimentations he sets out on a mission to merge with the drumkit in order to open a channel to the world beyond.
Aske has performed on various instruments with Kresten Osgood, Snöleoparden, Badun, PO Jørgens, Maria Bertel, Elbow Trio, Høyoktan, Still and SOL, but on this glorious evening he’ll be performing the drums in a dynamic sound exploration with John Butcher.
