Join us for Philosophy Cafe to hear thought-provoking discussion on a variety of intriguing themes. Sometimes we treat others badly. When this happens, it seems that they should blame us. The same goes when others treat us badly. However, when we think about it, it is hard to know what makes this the case. After all, sometimes we treat others badly and it is not our fault. Other times it seems desirable for us to blame someone when they haven’t treated anyone badly. For example, if blaming them would make things go better overall. In this talk I shall discuss a distinction between when blame by someone would be fitting, when blame by us would be fitting, and when blame would be desirable. I shall then draw out some of the implications this has on when we should blame others.
