Philosophy and its Past: A Canon or History?

History of philosophy usually amounts to the study of a canon of authors, chosen from a perspective within the contemporary discipline. John Marenbon will ask whether a genuine history of philosophy - one suitably sceptical about the identity of its subject - may be more valuable not only as history, but also for philosophers.

Join us at the University of Reading for an engaging evening of discussion and reflection on the nature of philosophical inquiry and the way the history of philosophy is studied.

The evening will begin with drinks and canapés in Palmer 105, providing an opportunity to meet fellow attendees and chat in a relaxed setting before the lecture. The lecture will then take place in Palmer 109.

Speaker bio:

John Marenbon is Senior Research Fellow at Trinity College, Cambridge, Visiting Professor at the Università della Svizzera Italiana and Honorary Professor of Medieval Philosophy Emeritus in the University of Cambridge. He is a Fellow of the British Academy. His recent work includes The Oxford Handbook of Medieval Philosophy (editor); Pagans and Philosophers: the problem of paganism from Augustine to Leibniz; How Medieval Thinkers Analysed Cultural Differences (forthcoming); Facts and States of Affairs (forthcoming).
