PhillyPOP #7 | Grammy Awards Special! All ROTYs + SOTYs, 1996-2025

WHAT IS PHILLYPOP? PhillyPOP is a meetup group for discussing popular music–it’s like a book club for playlists. We meet roughly once a month and every meeting has a playlist of songs on a given theme (see below). Participants listen to the playlist in advance and discuss it at the meeting. It's a great way to connect with local music superfans and hear stuff you wouldn't have otherwise. (You may also notice a checkbox marked "Keep me updated on more events and news from this event organizer" when you RSVP, but I recommend following the profile page instead, which will email you every time I schedule a new event.)

NEXT EVENT: What's the first thing you think of when someone brings up music awards? The American Music Awards, right? Just kidding--if you're anything like me, it's the Grammys all day, baby. Love them or hate them, they've become music's premier award institution since they started all the way back in 1959. The 2026 ceremony will be held on Sunday, Feb. 1, which is why the night before, we're holding an open discussion about all things Grammys, touching on such topics as:

• Their impact on music and pop culture more generally
• How they've changed over the years
• Memorable moments and performances from past ceremonies
• How they've impacted the careers of nominated and winning artists
• How the biggest winners have predicted (or not) the music that has gone on to become considered classic years later
• How it compares to other music award shows
• Personal experiences with the Grammys, including if you've ever attended (or been nominated/won!)

After this conversation, you'll be fully equipped to discuss the 2026 Grammys at watch parties, social gatherings, group chats, and the proverbial office water cooler.

This meeting's playlist consists of all the Grammy winners for Song of the Year and Record of the Year for the past 30 years (1996-2025). In 17 of those years, the same song won both awards, and in the remaining 13 years, different songs won them. The playlist is arranged in chronological order; in years where different songs won, the SOTY comes first. We're not expecting any participant submissions this time, but if you have an especially interesting Grammy-related track or two you'd like to discuss, please send them via the "Contact" link below (under the "Organized by" header) or email them to [email protected] and I'll add them to the playlist.
