PhillyPOP #11 | Let's Go Crazy: Music on Mental Health

WHAT IS PHILLYPOP? PhillyPOP is a meetup group for discussing popular music–it’s like a book club for playlists. Every month we listen to a playlist, then we meet in person to talk about it. Each playlist has a theme, and attendees are encouraged (but not required) to contribute songs that fit the theme as they understand it. It's a great way to connect with local music superfans and hear stuff you wouldn't have otherwise. You can find more info about us on our profile page, where you can also follow us to be notified about future events. (There's also a checkbox marked "Keep me updated on more events and news from this event organizer" when you RSVP, but I recommend following the profile page instead, which will email you every time I schedule a new event.)

NEXT EVENT: The topic of mental health is an obvious choice for Mental Health Awareness Month (May) simply because there are so many songs on the subject. Hell, we probably could have done an event based only on songs with the word "crazy" in the title (our starter playlist only has seven of these). But here at PhillyPOP we take an inclusive view of mental health, acknowledging that it can be good, bad, just plain weird, and a host of other things. And it's a topic that spans genres: our playlist already has old and new classics by Patsy Cline, Jimi Hendrix, Prince, Ricky Martin, Erykah Badu, Florence + the Machine, and many others, but we're always looking for more.

1. Attend at least one event hosted by someone else
2. Email your theme idea to [email protected]
3. Create a starter playlist with 20-30 songs demonstrating your theme
4. Set an event date

I'll handle the venue reservations, promo, and Eventbrite logistics--all you have to do is show up and lead the discussion.
