One could argue that Philly Nelson is a jam band hidden behind the mask of a tribute act. Not unlike, in some ways, Joe Russo’s Almost Dead, Philly Nelson plays a specific catalog of songs while allowing for interpretation and musical exploration; a defining trait you might not find in other bands that perform a live homage to their founding creator. Philly Nelson avoids the term Tribute Act, recognizing that they are not. Rather, it’s an open adoration and exploration of a vast catalog of Willie’s songs, both written and recorded.
Led by, Daniel S. Bower, Philly Nelson is a collective of musicians who share a common love for Willie as well as a full-time vocation in performing live.
In a sea of tribute bands that base their performance on imitation, Philly Nelson offers a refreshing approach in their openness to spontaneity and flow. Much like the music of significant improvisational performers such as Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane, The Grateful Dead, and Phish, Philly Nelson not only plays the song in its recorded arrangement but also embraces improvisation, providing a pleasant mix of both familiarity & adventure to the listener.
