Philly AIDS Thrift presents a free, family-friendly festivity! Philly AIDS Thrift 19th Year Anniversary Block Party will take place at the 700 block of S. 5th Street on Saturday, September 28th, 2024, from 12:00 pm to 6:00 pm. (Right in front of the Store!)
The fun-filled day will feature:
*DJ Robert Drake from WXPN is spinning the hits throughout the day!
*Our 5th annual Pie-Eating Contest, emceed by CBS 3's news anchor, Jim Donovan. MANNA generously provides the pies in correlation to their annual fundraiser, Pie In The Sky! For the first time this year, we will have gluten-free blueberry pies! You can sign up in person to participate in the pie-eating contest! It’s gonna get messy!
*Double Dutch Meetup - an inclusive safe space that aims to empower and promote community-building, togetherness, and fitness. It also uses its platform to promote small local businesses and help families in need. The Double Dutch MeetUp started with a random idea of its founder, Ashley Baldwin. Originally, kicking off with a crowd of 20 guests at their first meet up to now over 200 to 300 guest per event in just 3 short months. Double Dutch is such nostalgic activity. It brings people of all ages and all walks of life together. Best part is that you don’t have know how to jump Double Dutch. THEY WILL TEACH YOU! Let’s MeetUp.”
*A Celebrity Dunk Tank, which features Philly locals who make a splash in the community. This year, we have,
---Stef Jolles - Owner of Philly's Premier Punk Rock N Roll Shop, Crash Bang Boom
---Chris Bartlett - Executive Director of the William Way LGBT Community Center, a nonprofit organization serving as a resource and hub for Philly’s LBGT+ community
---John Jarboe - the founder and artistic director of the Bearded Ladies Cabaret, a queer arts organization that sits on your lap and sings you a story
---Conrad Benner - Founder of Streets Dept and Streets Dept Walls. Founded as a photo-blog in January 2011, Streets Dept has grown into a multi-platform showcase of Philadelphia public art and public space. They discover and celebrate commissioned and non-commissioned art on the streets and in the public spaces of Philadelphia. Connor is also a curator at Philly Mural Arts and the Host of WHYY’s “Art, Outside” podcast!
*For the first time this year, we will have a dog kissing booth, called Smooch-A-Pooch, in partnership with Street Tails Animal Rescue, non-profit organization based in Northern Liberties, dedicated to rescuing and rehoming abandoned and unwanted dogs. Their mission is to provide each dog with the care and love they need to find a forever home, promoting a community of compassion and responsible pet ownership.
