When we think of melody, the sound of the piano immediately springs to mind. But this is to forget that other strings – plucked this time – once held sway in aristocratic salons. The guitar, together with its cousins the lute or theorbo, wove elaborate designs around the voice. This required a virtuoso capable of both opulence of sound and ethereal atmospheres. These are precisely the talents of Thibaut Garcia, a rising star, but already a worthy partner of Philippe Jaroussky, whose vocal qualities need no further introduction. These two partners take us on a wide-ranging exploration of melody, from the subtleties of the English masters to Schubert’s dramatic Erlkönig, from Mozart’s crepuscular Abendempfindung to the Iberian flashes of Granados’ Amor y odio, el mirar de la maja, via the French refinement of Fauré and Poulenc’s À sa guitare, his tribute to the genius of Ronsard.

FR ― Lorsqu’on pense au genre de la mélodie, les sonorités du piano surgissent immédiatement à l’esprit. Mais c’est oublier qu’autrefois d’autres cordes – pincées cette fois – régnaient dans les salons aristocratiques. La guitare, et avec elle ses cousins le luth ou le théorbe, tissait autour de la voix des textures savantes. Il fallait pour cela un·e virtuose capable aussi bien d’opulence sonore que d’atmosphères impalpables. C'est le cas de Thibaut Garcia, étoile montante mais d’ores et déjà digne partenaire de Philippe Jaroussky, dont il n’est plus nécessaire de louer les qualités vocales. Ces deux complices nous emmènent dans une vaste exploration de la mélodie, des subtilités des maîtres anglais au dramatique Erlkönig de Schubert, du crépusculaire Abendempfindung de Mozart aux fulgurances ibériques d'Amor y odio, el mirar de la maja de Granados, en passant par le raffinement français de Fauré et À sa guitare, hommage de Poulenc au génie de Ronsard.

NL ― Als je aan liederen denkt, zal je je waarschijnlijke verwachten aan een kleurrijke pianobegeleiding. Heel vroeger voerden echter in de aristocratische salons andere snaarinstrumenten het hoge woord. De gitaar, en ook haar broertjes de luit en de teorbe, begeleidden zangers en weefden ingewikkelde structuren om de stemmen heen. Alleen een virtuoos was in staat zo’n waterval van klanken te produceren en de geraffineerde sfeer te vatten. Thibaut Garcia is zo’n virtuoos, hij is een rijzende ster en sinds kort de volwaardige partner van Philippe Jaroussky. Samen nemen ze ons mee op een uitgebreide ontdekkingsreis door de wereld van het lied, van subtiele parels van de Engelse meesters tot de dramatische Erlkönig van Schubert, van de door schemerlicht doordrongen Abendempfindung van Mozart tot de Iberische passie in Amor y odio en El mirar de la maja van Granados, met ook een zijsprongetje naar het Franse raffinement, met Fauré en met À sa guitare, een hommage van Poulenc aan de grote dichter Ronsard.
