About this Event
Philanthropic Psychology 2.0: Learning To Speak About Love in Fundraising
Led by Prof. Jen Shang and Prof. Adrian Sargeant
1-2 August 2024
National WWI Museum and Memorial, Kansas City, MO
In this annual 1.5 day workshop Jen and Adrian will take a deep dive into the latest science of Philanthropic Psychology or “PhilPsych”.
Over the course of the workshop you’ll learn a completely new perspective on how to build deeper, more meaningful relationships with your supporters.
The class is based on a five year program of experimental research with live fundraising communications from a diverse range of organizations working in different countries with different categories of cause. The team will share many examples of organizations that have massively increased their income and built quantifiably stronger relationships.
But a unique feature of this workshop is that all participants will be asked to share a sample of their own communications in advance of the event for the team to review. In this way, they will use examples in their teaching that are directly relevant to the group. Workshop sessions will also allocate substantive time to working with those examples and improving them.
In this 1.5 day class, we will cover:
An introduction to Philanthropic Psychology:
- What is it?
- Why does it matter?
- What value can it offer fundraisers, donors and the wider organization?
The Science of Donor Identity:
- Who are your donors? How does people’s sense of who they are drive giving?
- How does this way of thinking make a difference in how you think about your role as a fundraiser?
Psychological Well-Being
- The key components of human wellbeing relevant to giving: connectedness,
- autonomy and competence?
- How does giving contribute to donors’ personal sense of wellbeing?
- How can we encourage and boost supporter wellbeing?
Love
- How can we define love in giving?
- What kinds of love should we focus on?
- Who should the love be between?
- How should that love feel?
- What can that love achieve?
- What is the best way to talk to your donors to grow their capacity to love others?
