A stunning fusion of classical and modern music with the hugely talented: Phil Shotton Saxophone Quartet. The Friends of Lowther are excited to bring this performance to the Chapman Studio and recommend this as one not to be missed.
Phil Shotton - Soprano Saxophone
Phil Shotton regularly performs alongside many national and international jazz artists and has appeared at major jazz festivals, venues and music festivals throughout the country and abroad. Highly sought-after as both a performer and recording artist in both classical and jazz styles, Phil has released two albums under his own name and appeared on numerous recordings as a sideman.
In addition to being in high demand as a guest soloist, Phil tours the UK as a member of Cafe Society, The Jake Leg Jug Band, The Jazz Sirs and the Dad’s Army Jazz Band.
As a conductor, Phil directs many ensembles from Symphony Orchestras, to big bands and small chamber & jazz ensembles. Phil has graced the podium regularly at the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall, the Bridgwater Hall and Birmingham Symphony Hall.
Phil has lectured in music performance at several UK universities where he has also directed student ensembles and delivered instrumental lessons to undergraduate and post-graduate students. He has given workshops and masterclasses at Universities and Music Conservatoires across the country covering instrumental technique, improvisation, ensemble playing and conducting.

Abi Clark - Alto Saxophone
Abi is a musician originally from Hertfordshire, and has been based in Liverpool since 2018. Being both a flautist and saxophonist, her experience ranges from chamber and symphony orchestras to jazz quartets and big bands, which has allowed her to perform at iconic venues such as Cadogan Hall and Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club. Abi also has a long standing love of musical theatre, and much of her current work involves playing in productions for amateur dramatic societies around the North West.
John Padfield - Tenor Saxophone
A music graduate of the University of Birmingham, John studied clarinet with Colin Parr. In the field of classical music, John has worked with a diverse range of ensembles including the Northern Wind Orchestra, National Concert Orchestra and British Clarinet Ensemble. As a performer of jazz and commercial music John has appeared at jazz clubs and festivals both nationally and internationally, and tours the UK with a Pink Floyd tribute band. As an educator, John was the founder director of the Sefton Youth Jazz Orchestra, and directed the Liverpool Youth Jazz Orchestra from its inception in 1990 until 2012, touring with talented groups of young musicians in Europe, the United States, Canada and the Far East.
Karoline Brennan - Baritone Saxophone
Hailing from Yorkshire, Karoline started playing baritone sax aged 13 in the school big band. Moves to Somerset and then Gloucestershire saw her playing with a range of ensembles in various genres, before heading to New Orleans to play and then Liverpool to study. After a saxophone-free spell in London, Karoline moved back to Liverpool where she rekindled her love of playing, first joining the wonderful Maghull Wind Orchestra (if you’re local, come and join us!) and the Phil Shotton Big Band. These days, Karoline mostly plays big band tenor sax and is looking forward to an afternoon of hitting the deep notes with the quartet.
