About the Debate
How useful are citation counts as a measure of research performance?
Citation counts are widely used as indicators of scholarly influence and research impact. However, citations do not necessarily reflect research quality and can be influenced by factors such as discipline, career stage, visibility, reputation, self-citation, and differences across citation databases.
This special RSS session will explore the usefulness and limitations of citation counts as measures of research performance, featuring perspectives from Prof. Michael Frese and Prof. Shardul Phadnis.
The debate will feature opening statements, rebuttals, a themed discussion, and an audience Q&A.
Debate Format:
