"Human Trafficking in East Tennessee: Recognizing & Responding"

Human trafficking is not just something that happens overseas or in major U.S. cities. It is happening right here in East Tennessee, although it often does not look like what we might expect.

During this workshop we will take a closer look at:

  • Myths and misconceptions about human trafficking;
  • The realities of human trafficking, the different types of human trafficking, and the tactics traffickers use;
  • Human trafficking indicators, vulnerabilities, and at-risk populations;
  • Human trafficking within the hospitality industry;
  • The prevalence of human trafficking in East Tennessee;
  • Tennessee's coordinated, statewide response to human trafficking; and
  • How to respond and who to report to if you suspect human trafficking

*This training includes content that touches on the following topics: domestic and sexual abuse, sexual exploitation, and sexual exploitation of minors as well as related impacts such as mental health issues, substance use disorder, and self-harm. The content may also reference intersecting issues such as gender-based violence and discrimination of marginalized groups. The purpose is to engage openly, thoughtfully, and empathetically with difficult topics, however, please prioritize your mental and emotional wellbeing. We recommend that attendees are 18+.

Meet the Speaker

Hayley Griffith, Education & Outreach Coordinator, Community Coalition Against Human Trafficking

Hayley joined the Community Coalition Against Human Trafficking’s team in May of last year, before which she worked as the Coordinated Community Response & Outreach Director at the Knoxville Family Justice Center—a multi-agency, multi-disciplinary partnership providing domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, child abuse, and elder abuse resources and services—where she facilitated the partnership development and community engagement of the organization. Prior to that, Hayley worked as an Outreach Coordinator & Paralegal for the Tennessee Senior Law Alliance at Legal Aid of East Tennessee after earning her Bachelor of Arts and paralegal certification from Carson-Newman University and The University of Tennessee, respectively.

Hayley is passionate about developing and implementing new initiatives to address issues of domestic & sexual violence and service provision to vulnerable populations at the societal and systematic levels. She played an instrumental role in bringing a Domestic Violence Conference to the East Tennessee region as well as launching Knox County’s Domestic Violence High-Risk and Domestic Abuse Death Review teams.

Hayley is a Knoxville-area native and currently lives in New Market, TN. She enjoys reading, gardening, and hiking and camping in the Smokies in her free time.
