Step back in time and experience an important origin of American falconry at the historic Craighead House—an inspiring education and nature center nestled along the Yellow Breeches Creek.
The Craigheads’ summertime late-Victorian home is more than just a beautiful setting—it’s the birthplace of a legacy. Here, Frank Craighead Sr., known as the “Scholar of the Everglades,” raised a family that would go on to shape the worlds of conservation, literature, and wildlife science. Within these walls, Jean Craighead George began her journey to becoming a Newbery Award-winning author, while her twin brothers, John and Frank Jr., pioneered the sport of falconry in the United States during their summers in the 1930s.
As teenagers, the twins trained birds of prey and documented their experiences in National Geographic—sparking national interest in falconry. They later became leading scientists, conducting groundbreaking grizzly bear research in Yellowstone and helping to establish protections for America’s free-flowing rivers through the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act.
Join us near Boiling Springs, PA to celebrate this extraordinary heritage, reconnect with old friends and connect with new ones. Through the immersive experience, you’ll gain insight into the enduring impact of the Craighead family’s work in conservation and education.
Bring a chair, a donation item for the raffle, and your fishing rod - guests are permitted to fish on the property - and join us in the spirit of discovery that continues to define Craighead House.
No preregistration is required, Creekview Food Company’s food truck will be on site offering a tasty lunch menu until 2:00 pm.
