Residents of La Plata and Archuleta counties who get their drinking water from a private well are eligible for a FREE test for Per- and Poly-Fluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS).
PFAS are toxic chemicals that can build up in ground and surface water supplies. These "forever chemicals" are used to make household and commercial products that resist heat and chemical reactions and repel oil, stains, grease and water. PFAS can be found in people, fish, and wildlife all over the world.
The CDC's Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry states that PFAS might increase the risk of cancer, affect the immune system, increase cholesterol levels, act as endocrine disruptors, reduce female fertility, and adversely impact infant/early childhood growth and development.
