Peter Rowan is a legend in American music. He was born on July 4th, 1942 in Massachusetts, formed his first band in 1956, and cemented his legacy at the age of 21 when he was hired to join the father of bluegrass Bill Monroe and his Bluegrass Boys. He played rhythm guitar and sang lead and harmony vocals with the Bluegrass Boys and he wrote co-wrote the bluegrass classic “Walls of Time” with Monroe.
In the decades after leaving Monroe, he went on to work with David Grisman in the band Earth Opera, and then worked with Grisman, Jerry Garcia, Vassar Clements, and John Kahn in the short-lived but well-loved band Old and in the Way. He went on to record countless records as a bandleader and with other artists. In his career he has 7 Grammy nominations in the bluegrass and folk categories, and has dabbled in other genres including rock, Hawaiian music, Tex-Mex, reggae and more. He is a musical shape shifter and a singer of the highest quality.
Peter played 2 shows at Chickie Wah Wah during the 2023 Festival season, and we had so much fun hosting him that he is coming back to do 2 more during NOLA x NOLA, on Friday October 4th and Saturday October 5th. He is bringing his band with him this time, featuring Mike Bub on bass, David Grier on guitar, and Larry Atamanuik on drums.
Once again, he will vary his material from night to night, with the theme of Friday night being “Songs and Stories” and the theme of the second night being Peter’s classic Old and In the Way song “Midnight Moonlight.” Come join us in celebrating the wonderful Peter Rowan!
