Malawi: (The Warm Heart of Africa) - it's music and people
Have you heard of The Warm Heart of Africa? This nickname was given to the country of Malawi, a country about the size of Pennsylvania wrapped around the third largest lake in Africa. It has a rich history going back thousands of years and is the home to many languages, types of music, landscapes and people. Peter Mawanga is one of Malawi's most preeminent musicians and cultural ambassadors. He has performed at Celtic Connections in Glasgow, Scotland and throughout the USA with his band The Amaravi Movement.
In addition to being a musical legend in his own country, he is also a champion of many social causes having founded many NGOs and serving on the boards of others focused on issues such as the epidemic of street children in Malawi and child education. Peter has given presentations on Malawian music and its culture to children and adults of all ages from elementary schools to college universities. In this rare duo show, he is accompanied by his long-time collaborator Andrew Finn Magill with whom he released the 2010 concept album for charity, Mau a Malawi: Stories of AIDS.
