Peter Kogan's Monsterful Wonderband

The name "Peter Kogan's Monsterful Wonderband" comes from the title track of his 2nd CD "Some Monsterful Wonderthing" which is a sardonic sendoff or the Richard Rogers tune "Something Wonderful". The septet's 3 horns, guitar and rhythm provide a many colored palette, which reflects Peter's long term experience as The Minnesota's Orchestra's timpanist. This show features Peter''s compositions along with select Duke Ellington classics, providing plenty of space for extraordinary solos from this extraordinary band!

Peter Kogan backed up Blues masters Lightnin' Hopkins, Floyd Jones and Honeyboy Edwards, appeared with the Larry Elgart Big Band and played with jazz, rock and blues bands in New York City before joining The Minnesota Orchestra as Principal Timpanist from 1986 - 2015.

In recent years he has released 4 well reviewed CDs, and his Monsterful Wonderband (the Septet), Quintet and Quartet have appeared at all the major jazz venues around Minneapolis and St Paul, MN. Peter's CD: JUST BEFORE MIDNIGHT features his most recent compositions. The Peter Kogan Quintet performed at the MetroNOME Brewery in St Paul as part of the Twin Cities 2022 Jazz Fest. The 2024 Jazz Fest featured The Peter Kogan Quintet in a special Pre Festival event, and the Quintet headlined the Twin Cities Jazz Festival fundraiser at Croooners on March 9th, 2025. Peter appeared with the Brian Grivna Quartet on June 21st at the 2025 Twin Cities JazzFest.

Since September, 2022 The MetroNOME Brewery has hosted montlhly PeterKoganJazzPresents - every third Thursday, featuring unique and distictive jazz combos led by Peter.
