Perturbation - A physical theatre performance in honour of surrealist artist and writer - Shelia Legge (1911-1949) - with Q and A.
About this Event

The Writer’s Mark is a surrealist company, based in Brighton (United Kingdom) that focuses on celebrating/exploring the ‘worlds’ of surreal writers and visionaries from our past; through the mediums of art and theatre.

The Company delves into the psychology and visceral imprint of each writer – their legacy, what they leave behind and how this can be interpretated through physical theatre, art, mime, text and ensemble. Research and a ‘need’ to explore the human condition, processes and the livelihood of each writer is an essential part of the process.

Coming straight from the Adelaide Salon Gala at The Royal Pavilion, The Writer’s Mark presents – Perturbation – for one evening at The Regency Town House - a performance that pays homage to Shelia Legge (1911-1949) – a writer and performance Artist who is known for her involvement within the Surrealist Movement. This performance is inspired by key events in Shelia Legge’s life. There will be a Q and A after the performance with Natasha Higdon (Founder and Artistic Director) and Stephanie Prieto Trincado (Performer and Co-collaborator).

This performance is deeply rooted in the societal pressures placed upon women during that decade, with an unwavering sense of hope and desire to be part of something special – a place she felt she belonged. Natasha Higdon notes, ‘It is an honour to celebrate Shelia Legge’s contribution to the United Kingdom’s Surrealist thinkers. Recent research indicates she was integral to the planning of the First International Surrealist Exhibition (1936) and was asked to be involved by the late David Gascoyne (1916-2001). I can see her vividly, alone in her bedsit in Earl’s Court – waiting to get the call to be involved.’

Through use of personified mime, physical theatre and prop manipulation Natasha Higdon and Stephanie Prieto Trincado move through the space - come and watch as they melt and shift through surrealist hieroglyphics, moments in time that have shaped art, literature and theatre – as they seek to discover - what happened to Shelia Legge?
