Featuring masterworks loved by audiences and performers alike, the program is centred around the sunny optimism of Schubert’s much-loved Octet. Richard Strauss’ Metamorphosen for 23 solo strings tempers this, its dark counterpoint radiating with an elegiac depth. Gershwin’s Lullaby for Strings begins the afternoon with gentle allusions to blues and ragtime, before Lachlan Skipworth’s recent Altiora Peto for trumpet and strings shines with immediacy and rhythmic energy.
