About this Event
Perspectives Over Pints is a monthly lecture series exploring the intersection of Utah and contemporary culture — from environment to industry to public life. Each talk delivers a straightforward look at what’s happening and why it matters. Come for the talk, stay for the pint, leave with a new perspective.
In this chapter we'll discuss ochre pigments and the relationship between humans and geology through an art lens.
Key Takeaways Include:
1. Ochre is our geo-kin, and in our relationship to Ochre, with its many uses, we can reconsider our human relationship to the more-than-human.
2. Color is more than an abstract concept or experience, it's a material with agency.
3. We can all relate to color beyond commodified pantone codes.
Our featured speaker is Elpitha Tsoutsounakis, a Cretan-American designer, printer, and educator. She operates Books & Supply (@books-and), a design, art, and architecture storefront and community project space in downtown Salt Lake City. She was a design faculty at the University of Utah from 2010-2025 where she founded the Division of Multi-disciplinary Design. She continues her design research and creative work through the Field Studio Geontological Survey, or FSGS, a speculative design practice with Ochre and the more-than-human (unknownprospect.org). She has exhibited and published locally, nationally, and internationally. She also currently serves as Chair of the advisory board for Epicenter in Green River, Utah. @Elpitha unknownprospect.org
