The Permian Basin Youth Symposium-Background

Have you heard that the Teen Pregnancy Rate in Odessa has decreased? You would be correct, but the Texas Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy reported in 2019 that the teen birth rate in Ector County is 162% above the National rate and 83% above the State of Texas.

What are we doing to help?

The Permian Basin Teen Pregnancy Prevention Coalition is hosting our first two-day symposium to help educate our community service providers, community leaders, and adolescents about this pressing issue.

Day One is for the Service Providers, which includes physicians, nurses, teachers, social workers, community leaders, and anyone who works with adolescents. A day's highlight will be speakers, an adolescent panel, and an excellent opportunity for community networking during lunch.

Day Two is All about the Youth! Learning about adolescent issues from community leaders and peers to have open discussions on pressing topics. The highlight of this day is the Film Festival. Short films that teens created for a teen to help educate each other about issues in their daily lives.

How can you help?

The Permian Basin Youth Symposium two-day educational event is a way we can all help combat the Ector County Teen Pregnancy Rates. We are offering our adolescents in our community a free, fun day full of games, food, and education. Like any event in our community, we do require community support. There are opportunities to furnish meals, underwrite a speaker or event, help with prize money, and more. Your sponsor will help bring this much-needed education to our community.
