Amber Thumann is an engineer who has spent the last 20 years studying the intersection of climate change, peak everything, and how humans can adapt. She has 15 years of experience in adult education and she currently teaches Permaculture Design at the University of Kansas and through the Kansas Permaculture Institute. She also leads the educational programming for KPI and co-chairs the board of directors. Amber is a homesteader, urban farmer, and mother with 20 years of experience in sustainable living. She has practiced urban and broad acre permaculture, built an off-grid home and is now building a homestead near Wichita, Kansas. Amber lives an evolving life focused on the principle that many small changes add up over time - "Every day, little up".Ms. Thumann will begin with an overview of the current state of Agrivoltaics, the practice of combining food production with large scale solar installations, in the US and where it seems to be going in the near future. Then she will shift to a discussion of how permaculture can be applied in an urban or suburban setting through a series of case studies showcasing a variety of aspects of permaculture such as rain gardens, backyard food forests, rainwater catchment systems, and integrated perennial and annual food gardens.
As always, bring a dish to share at 6:30 and remember this is a Zero Waste event. The program will start at 7:30.
