About this Event
Dance artist, Ade Suharto, shares short dance works inspired by two woodcut prints created by Indonesian artist Fitri Dwi Kurniasih (Fitri DK) in 2019. Titled Kendeng lestari (Everlasting kendeng) and Kami muzi dia wawo tana (We live on the land), the prints are new acquisitions from MAGNT’s Stephen Shaul Collection of Contemporary Indonesian Art. They address protest movements led by women on the islands of Java and Flores to resist development threats to their motherland, culture and livelihoods.
In response to these women and Fitri DK’s artistic voice, Ade honours the strength, struggle and resilience from her mother country. With this project, Ade continues her practice in artist-to-artist dialogues and for the first time, she acknowledges her ancestral connection to land cultivation.
Ade will perform these dance works in a beautiful outdoor setting at the Museum. Afterwards, the audience will get an opportunity to hear about Ade’s dance processes through a live Q&A session hosted by MAGNT’s Curator of Southeast Asian Art.
