People Laughing are a three piece rock band based in Nottingham. Their sound is born from an authenticity in Matt Grocott’s songwriting, with songs that are emotionally direct, hook-led and unafraid to sit in a vulnerable place. There’s a rawness at the heart of what they do, balancing melody and immediacy with the energy of a band that has always been built around playing live.
Formed in late 2025, frontman Matt Grocott reached out to drummer Luke Hallam about forming an originals band. Grocott’s previous band, The Shrives, produced by Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong, ended back in December 2018, so there was a plethora of songs and ideas yet to see the light of day. Luke heard the demos and was immediately ready to create something special and authentically themselves, taking the existing material and helping shape it into something new. Bassist Ollie Carnell joined not long after, becoming the last piece of the puzzle and setting the tone for People Laughing’s dynamic as a three piece.
Their first show was supporting The Molotovs at Nottingham’s Rescue Rooms in January 2026, followed shortly by a performance at Beat The Streets at the end of the month. These shows set the tone for the kind of band they wanted to be, building a reputation for energetic live performances and an honest connection with their audience from the very beginning. They also had a three show acoustic residency at Rescue Rooms’ legendary open mic night, stripping the songs back and showing a softer, more intimate side to the band that had not been seen in their previous performances.
Since the release of their debut single, ‘One Thing’, in January 2026, followed by the singles ‘Mano a Mano’ and ‘Suffocating’, they have received support from BBC Introducing and Kerrang! Radio. Although People Laughing are still a fairly new band, they have already played iconic festivals such as Dot to Dot Festival and Splendour Festival, sharing the bill with major acts including The Flaming Lips and Snow Patrol. Building such a solid reputation in such a short amount of time has quickly established People Laughing as a band to watch on the live circuit, with Nottingham’s LeftLion Magazine calling them ‘one to watch’ in 2026.
Their latest single, ‘Three Eyes’, is out now. A raucous punk song, it pushes the boundaries of People Laughing and the styles they intend to envelop into their sound. Louder, darker and more confrontational than their previous releases, it marks another step forward for the band as they continue to develop their identity and explore how far they can take their music without losing the honesty at the centre of it.
Their first headline show is on Friday 18th December at The Bodega, Nottingham, marking an important moment for the band as they take their live show to the next level and bring together everything they have built throughout their first year. With more music already in the works and plenty more live dates to come, People Laughing are continuing to build on everything they have achieved throughout 2026, while steadily defining exactly what kind of band they want to become.
