We will celebrate the Extended Pentecost Vigil on Saturday, May 23, at 7:00 p.m. at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, 714 49th Street. Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful. A reception in the Ministry Center cafeteria will follow the Mass.EXTENDED VIGIL: A TRADITION RENEWED
As we approach the great Solemnity of Pentecost, we invite you to participate in a special celebration, the Extended Form of the Vigil Mass for Pentecost, a beautiful and ancient liturgy restored in the Roman Missal, 3rd Edition (2011). This solemn vigil, celebrated on Saturday evening, offers a profound opportunity to gather, like Mary and the Apostles in the Upper Room, to pray for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit.
The Extended Pentecost Vigil, inspired by the structure of the Easter Vigil, is a unique moment in the liturgical year. Unlike the simple Vigil Mass, this extended form includes four Old Testament readings, each with a responsorial psalm and prayer, tracing the Holy Spirit’s work through salvation history. These readings, drawn from texts like Joel 3:1-5, speak of God’s promise to pour out His Spirit on His people, culminating in the Gospel proclamation of Christ’s gift of the Spirit.
WHAT TO EXPECT
The readings and prayers invite us to meditate on God’s mighty deeds and to open our hearts to the Holy Spirit’s transformative power. The Eucharistic liturgy unites us with Christ and one another in the Spirit’s bond of love. The musicians will offer selections from Mass No. 15 in C major, K. 317, “Coronation Mass,” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, accompanied by a string orchestra.
WHY CELEBRATE THE EXTENDED VIGIL?
This liturgy is more than a historical curiosity; it’s a chance to deepen our faith and renew our commitment to Christ’s mission. The extended readings and prayers remind us of the Holy Spirit’s role in guiding the Church and empowering us to live as witnesses to the Gospel. As we pray together, we ask the Spirit to “bring to perfection His work in the world,” filling us with hope and courage for the journey ahead.
NOTE: The 4:00 p.m. Pentecost Vigil anticipated Mass will be offered at St. Elizabeth on Saturday, May 23. There will be NO 5:30 p.m. Mass offered at St. James the Apostle that evening.
