Yes, you are reading that right! It's a HIKE N' HELI!
The Pennant Point hike is a long one and folks visiting out there have been doing all they can to bring back the lighter debris like plastic bottles and smaller debris. (Great job folks!) But tires, traps, big rope balls and buoys are a different story... and are not things you want to hike over 5 kilometers back... so we recruited some help!
We have some flying friends that are going to help with this clean up! Our job is to hike out and put the heavy debris into supersacks, record the pick up locations and leave it for them to fly out! EPIC!!!
The Mission: Hike to targeted accumulation zones, pack heavy/bulky marine waste into high-capacity supersacks, drop precise GPS pins/coordinates for the flight crew, and secure the sacks against wind and tides.
Since Pennant Point at Crystal Crescent involves rugged granite terrain and coastal weather, ensuring you are fully prepared. This will keep the operation smooth and safe:
Gear & Attire Checklist:
Footwear: Sturdy, ankle-supporting hiking boots or heavy-duty rubber work boots with good traction (slippery granite and wet kelp!).
Hands: Durable work gloves (recommended for handling rough rope, sharp trap wire, and heavily weathered plastics).
Packs: Hydration bladder/water bottle (at least 2L recommended) and high-energy snacks/lunch.
Clothing: Layered clothing, windbreaker/rain shell, and high-visibility gear or bright colors (great for field safety).
Physical Level Note: Moderate-to-rigorous fitness required; involves steady hiking over loose rock, uneven boulder fields, and distance. (12+ kilometers per day of hiking)
