Discover the hidden world of pekapeka in the majestic Te Wao Nui a Tiriwa (Waitākere Ranges) forest.Join our team of pekapeka experts to learn about our native taonga species then grab a handheld detector and wander the forest edge ready to hear the enchanting sounds of pekapeka echolocation.
These tiny night dwellers communicate using echo-location.
We use handheld detectors that are easy to use at any age. They work by picking up the ultrasonic echolocation call that long-tailed bats use to navigate, feed and communicate with other bats. The detectors then reduce the ultrasonic calls down to a frequency humans can hear. When you do hear this taonga species it’s an exciting and truly magical experience!
All handheld detectors will be supplied. Groups and families will share a device. Depending on numbers, some people may need to share a device between groups.
Drive in to Falls Road and follow it past the golf club and dwellings until the end of the road. Meet at the picture frame near the bottom car park.
This event is koha (give what you can) based. Our organisation is a registered charitable trust and we currently do not receive funding to host these events. Any donation you can make will be used towards our ongoing conservation efforts for our Tiaki Pekapeka project
