Pediatric Patient Teaching on Diabetes
COURSE DESCRIPTION
Diabetes is a complex disease. Knowledge about the pathophysiology, awareness of symptoms, treatment and management are necessary to safely care for these patients as well as provide education to the patient and family.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
The learner will gain an increased understanding of the following concepts:
- The pathophysiology of diabetes
- The difference between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes
- Recognizing the signs and symptoms of diabetes
- Understanding the pathophysiology of diabetic ketoacidosis and its management
- Comprehension of diabetic diet and carbohydrate counting as they relate to insulin calculation and administration
- Importance or educating parents/guardians in how to teach their child about diabetes care (e.g., administration of SQ injections, teaching aides such as the Pink Panther book)
- "Stackin" insulin doses and the importance of patient history and diet/carbohydrate counting
CONTINUING EDUCATION
This continuing education (CE) course is approved for 5 contact hours by the California Board of Registered Nursing. Contact hours awarded for full program attendance only. Partial credit will not be given for partial attendance. This course is offered through Lucile Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford by the Center for Professional Excellence and Inquiry (CPEI).

- Stanford Children's Health Employees (No Continuing Education credits): FREE
- Stanford Children's Health Employees (with RN Continuing Education credits): $35
- General Admission: $200
For Stanford Children's Health/LPCH Employees: Effective August 01, 2020, the Center for Professional Excellence and Inquiry at Stanford Children's Health will ONLY accept credit card payments for course fees and materials. CANCELLATION and REFUND
- Cancellation at least 2 weeks (10 business days) prior to course date will be provided full refund
- Cancellation less than 2 weeks (10 business days) prior to course date will be refunded minus processing fee of $35 and cost of any course materials
- NO REFUND will be offered for cancellation less than 5 business days prior and for no show or cancellation on the day of the class

- Cancellation by CPEI: Schedules, venues and details are subject to change and cancellation. Registered participants will be provided with as much advance notice as possible if this should occur. If CPEI cancels class, full refund will be given.
