Pedalboard Theory: Intro to Signal Flow and Gain Staging
$5 Cover for members
Workshop will cover:
-The concept of signal flow. “Flowing down the River.” From point A to B to C, your signal or tone is affected by everything it passes through, IN ORDER. So we think of it that way, it’s not the sum of the parts, it’s how they are put together and how the signal flows through these different gain stages that matters.
-Gain staging. Difference between input gain and output volume and why driving the input harder is not the best solution.
-Pedal order as cause/effect. Why putting things in certain places makes sense, but only as guidelines, not rules.
-Basic tone-shaping logic
-EQ and how that affects gain, both going in and coming out, and the beneficial differences of both. How different frequencies or bandwidth’s affect the overall gain picture differently. Also the benefits of multiple EQ stages.
-Demystifying Compression. “Distortion or Clipping for your clean tone.” The basics. What does what control wise, and how it affects tone by putting compression in different points of the chain, and the benefits of each.
-Power basics
-Physical layout. Linear signal flow layout vs functional layout.
-Troubleshooting framework. Tools to have, etc.
